On Sunday, June 30th, the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg launched a new era of fitness and wellness in our community with a dedication of the Symons Family Fitness Center at the Grass Campus, in loving memory of Stephen and Adam Symons.

The event was held ahead of the official opening of the fitness center on July 1st, and brought together community members, donors, and friends to get a sneak peek of the facilities and hear from those who made the fitness center possible.

Susan Symons spoke about her family’s motivation for supporting the Grass Campus and the fitness center and shared memories of her late husband and son, for whom the facility is dedicated. Stephen, who passed away in December, was able to see the fitness center on his last visit to Harrisburg.

“One of the things that Stephen and I both felt was really important was to be able to give to other people and things that matter,” Susan said. “And this is an example of that – we need a place that is for the Jewish community, and at the same time is welcoming to everyone.”

The new fitness center represents a significant upgrade in athletic facilities at Jewish institutions in Harrisburg. It includes two dozen brand new Precor treadmills and ellipticals, six fitness studios, two saunas, a lounge area, and much more.

“We wanted to create a place that better reflected, on the outside, the quality of who we are on the inside,” said Abby Smith, Federation Board Chair. “The Symons Family understood that immediately.”

The event recognized the bright future of the Health & Wellness program at the Grass Campus, while also acknowledging the storied history of JCC Fitness. Longtime athlete Larry Freedman was honored with the “Iron Man of the JCC Award.”

“Within these walls, we have everything you need to reach your health and wellness goals, regardless of age or ability,” said Susannah Gillespie, Health & Wellness Director. “But this Fitness Center is more than just weights and treadmills – it’s a place to build friendships, to challenge yourself, and to find support in your wellness journey.”

Rabbi Ron Muroff of Chisuk Emuna Congregation reflected on the importance of a place like the Symons Family Fitness Center as a way to keep the community healthy and thriving.

“The fact that the Symons Family and so many other donors to the Grass Campus campaign are dedicating areas of our new home in memory of loved ones is a beautiful expression of love and an impactful way to honor their memories and keep their memories and legacies alive,” Rabbi Muroff said. “May this be a place where we are strengthened physically and experience spiritual contentment and peace.”
